Why do both sides in Ukraine's war call the enemy "gay"?

Since the Soviet era and up to today, same-sex relationships have been banned in Russia because the state emphasizes the need to produce soldiers, and propaganda frames it as abnormal. Political forces also exploit this narrative for their benefit. As a result, in Russia, being labeled as "gay" is considered one of the worst insults for a man.

Even in Ukraine, where 50-60-year-olds are also fighting, some share this view, as they grew up in the Soviet Union. This mindset has been passed down to younger generations, spreading the derogatory use of the term.

Moreover, in the Soviet/Russian army, sexual violence among conscripts is also prevalent, with higher-ranking officers often turning a blind eye or failing to prevent it.

There are many reasons behind this, but allowing same-sex marriages would gradually change attitudes. Therefore, the primary cause lies with the state and, specifically, the president.

Être gay n’empêche en rien d’être un bon combattant
