China Under Fire - Accused of Arming Houthis and Supporting Russia's War

On April 17th, the US State Department accused Chinese firm Chang Guang Satellite Technology of providing high-precision satellite imagery to Houthi rebels, directly supporting attacks on US interests in the Red Sea. Spokesperson Tammy Bruce labelled the continued support, despite US warnings, "unacceptable." This follows Ukrainian President Zelensky's earlier criticisms and evidence suggesting China provides military aid, including weapons components and factory support, to Russia for its war effort, and that Chinese nationals fight alongside Russian forces.

China officially denies supplying lethal aid, but skepticism persists due to its history of arming groups like the Taliban and evidence of its technology in conflict zones. Chang Guang, though seemingly private, exemplifies China's "Civil-Military Integration" strategy. Linked to the PLA-affiliated Changchun Institute of Optics, Fine Mechanics and Physics, its executives reportedly answer to top military general Zhang Youxia. The company was previously sanctioned in January 2023 for providing satellite imagery to Russia's Wagner Group, aiding their brutal Bakhmut campaign.

Evidence suggests Chinese military technology, including missile guidance components and drone designs resembling models like the CH-4, reaches Houthi forces, often disguised or routed through intermediaries like Iran or seized off Somalia. Israeli intelligence also indicates Chinese experts have enhanced Iran's missile capabilities, technology subsequently transferred to the Houthis.

These actions, coupled with China's expanding Djibouti military base used for extensive surveillance, underscore Beijing's strategy to project power and protect its vast Middle East economic interests amid global instability. The resulting Red Sea crisis has disrupted global shipping, significantly raising costs and rerouting vessels, while China's state-owned shipping lines, often exempt from Houthi attacks, gain market share. This pattern highlights China's role in escalating conflicts while maintaining a facade of neutrality.
