An unmanned drone incident occurred on December 12, 2024, at approximately 11:10 AM local time at the Jingzhou Olympic Sports Center in Hubei Province, China. The drone, identified as the Yilong-2H, lost control during a test flight and crashed into the stadium, injuring one spectator.

Eyewitness footage captured the drone’s rapid descent, ending in a fiery crash that sent thick black smoke into the air. The event raised public concerns over the safety protocols for drone operations, especially in urban areas.

Local authorities in the Hubei Jingzhou Economic Development Zone quickly reported the incident via WeChat. Images and videos of the aftermath, showing the damaged stadium and emergency response efforts, spread across Chinese social media shortly thereafter. Emergency services provided prompt assistance to the injured individual, who is now receiving medical treatment.

The Yilong-2H is part of a series of drones developed by the Aviation Industry Corporation of China (AVIC) for dual military and civilian use, including disaster response and emergency management. The crash underscores the risks of testing drones in populated areas, prompting an investigation into the cause of the malfunction.

In one of the photos, the Yilong-2H drone appears to have lost a wing—an unintended showcase of Chinese high-quality craftsmanship, even in military-grade equipment. This structural failure likely contributed to the crash and highlights the risks associated with deploying inadequately tested technology. The incident serves as a reminder that even advanced military systems require rigorous testing and quality assurance, especially in scenarios where malfunctions can endanger civilian safety.
