Chinese hacker activity against the US continues to grow

threatening national security and telecommunications networks. The Salt Typhoon group has launched a large-scale cyber-espionage campaign targeting key communication systems. Data theft includes call information, text messages, and their content for selected targets. US authorities warn of significant escalation and urge the use of encrypted communication tools to safeguard against further attacks.

The FBI and CISA have unexpectedly urged iPhone and Android users to prioritize encrypted messages and calls. This comes in response to a large-scale hacking campaign by the Chinese group Salt Typhoon aimed at US telecommunications networks. Hackers have stolen a substantial amount of metadata, including details about the timing, location, and recipients of communications. While in most cases, the content of calls and texts remained secure, some users’ data was compromised. Officials emphasize the importance of encryption as a defense against such attacks.

In the modern world, it’s incredibly easy to connect to a base station or intercept the transmission of SMS or call data.

U.S. agencies recommend using encrypted messaging apps like WhatsApp, Signal, or similar platforms that offer end-to-end encryption instead of the default SMS and phone calls. Default communication methods often lack sufficient security, making them an easy target for hackers, as seen with the Salt Typhoon group.
