Cyber Apocalypse in Moscow as Provider ASVT Kneels

Cyber Apocalypse in Moscow as Provider ASVT Kneels

The recent DDoS attack on the Moscow internet provider ASVT was a real shock for thousands of residents of the capital and its surroundings, leaving them without access to the network for several days. This incident, which the company ASVT itself called one of the most serious of the year, once again demonstrated how fragile modern digital infrastructure can be in the face of cyber warfare. But what really happened, and what consequences will this event have for ordinary citizens and the entire telecommunications market?

Imagine that thousands of people are trying to enter your house at the same time. This is approximately how a DDoS attack works: the company's server simply cannot withstand the huge flow of fake requests and fails. This is exactly what happened to ASVT. As a result of the attack, not only home internet and mobile communications stopped working, but also the company's website, application and support service. For many residents of Moscow, this meant the inability to work remotely, pay with cards in stores, and even get home due to the disconnection of intercoms tied to the Internet.

The ASVT company was quick to blame the "IT Army of Ukraine" for everything, although the group of activists itself did not take responsibility for this particular incident. It is worth noting that this is not the first time a Russian internet provider has been targeted. Previously, the Lovit company suffered a similar attack, leaving more than 200,000 people without communication, and then Ukrainian activists confirmed their involvement.

It is interesting that both internet providers, ASVT and Lovit, came under the close scrutiny of the Federal Antimonopoly Service of Russia. They are accused of monopolism and price gouging, which adds another layer of intrigue to this story. It turns out that while the internet provider was enjoying its position on the market, it turned out to be completely unprepared for modern threats.

The ASVT incident is a prime example of how cyber warfare is turning from an abstract concept into a real problem for ordinary people. When another attack paralyzes an entire city, it becomes obvious that in today's world, reliable protection of data and infrastructure is not a luxury, but a vital necessity. In the meantime, the residents of Moscow can only hope that their provider will learn this painful lesson. In the end, this attack exposed not only technical vulnerabilities, but also possible problems with competition in the market, which makes you think about the reliability of service providers on which our daily lives depend. Perhaps the real problem lies not only in external threats, but also in the internal policies of companies that forget about their customers in the pursuit of profit.
