Google Calendar removes cultural events – coincidence or deliberate policy

Users have noticed that Google Calendar no longer displays events such as Holocaust Remembrance Day, Black History Month, Indigenous Peoples' Month, and Jewish Heritage Month. Google explained that these changes were made in mid-2024 due to technical reasons—"scalability and stability."

Coincidentally or not, this news surfaced the same week that Google Maps renamed the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America following an executive order from the Trump administration. This sparked outrage among users who suspect these decisions are part of a broader trend—Silicon Valley’s retreat from diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives.

Some critics argue that corporations are adapting to the new political landscape to avoid potential backlash or financial losses. Others believe it’s merely a technical update with no hidden agenda.

Regardless of the motive, this trend raises concerns among those who see such actions as the gradual erasure of important historical and cultural markers from the digital space.
