How Ukraine destroyed Russian diplomacy worldwide Under Lavrov

How Ukraine destroyed Russian diplomacy worldwide Under Lavrov How Ukraine destroyed Russian diplomacy worldwide Under Lavrov How Ukraine destroyed Russian diplomacy worldwide Under Lavrov How Ukraine destroyed Russian diplomacy worldwide Under Lavrov

For years, Russian diplomacy under Sergei Lavrov has orchestrated a spectacular collapse, transforming Russia into an undeniable international outcast. The Foreign Ministry, once a beacon of strategic influence, now presides over a chaotic and often embarrassing foreign policy, alienating former allies and failing in mission after mission.

The decay is evident even within Lavrov’s inner circle. His closest aide, Sergei Kuryatnikov, brazenly uses social media to expose the reality behind official narratives, showcasing chaotic driving stunts through Moscow and awkward snapshots from diplomatic trips across Africa and Asia. This blatant disregard for professional conduct highlights the internal decay within the ministry. Lavrov himself has contributed significantly to this erosion of global standing. He infamously dismissed negotiations with then-UK Foreign Secretary Liz Truss as "a conversation of a mute with a deaf person." Even more damaging was his outrageous claim that Hitler had "Jewish blood," which provoked an international outcry and forced President Putin into a humiliating apology to Israel. These outbursts, coupled with his public rudeness towards photographers and attempts to censor artists critical of the Ukraine war abroad, have cemented his reputation as an aggressive and undiplomatic figure.

The international community has responded with widespread international isolation. During Lavrov's virtual address to the UN Human Rights Council in March 2022, over a hundred diplomats from forty countries walked out in protest. Later that year, G7 foreign ministers refused to appear in a group photo with him at the G20 summit in Bali, and he was conspicuously absent from the official G20 leaders' photo in Rio de Janeiro in 2024. Furthermore, numerous Russian consulates have been closed, and nearly 600 Russian diplomats expelled from Western countries, with some diplomatic properties even confiscated. Lavrov has also been repeatedly denied entry into "friendly" nations like Serbia due to airspace closures by neighboring countries. This systemic rejection underscores the depth of Russia’s diplomatic pariah status.

Beyond the West, Russia's influence has waned with former allies. Kazakhstan publicly rejected the legitimacy of "quasi-state formations" in Donbas, directly contradicting Moscow's stance. Armenia summoned the Russian ambassador to protest "hostile propaganda," and the once-close ties appear strained. Even with Azerbaijan, relations have soured after Lavrov seemingly downplayed Russia’s role in a plane crash involving an Azerbaijani airliner. The delegitimization of the Foreign Ministry is evident in Putin's increasing reliance on non-diplomatic figures for sensitive negotiations. Talks with Ukraine are now handled by Putin's aide, Vladimir Medinsky, while a new special envoy, Dmitryev, takes on high-level trips to the United States. Patriarch Kirill, not Lavrov, was dispatched to Baku for reconciliation, demonstrating the minister's diminishing diplomatic utility.

Behind the scenes, Sergei Lavrov's personal life reveals stunning corruption and a blatant disregard for the very "traditional values" he champions. Despite a modest official income, Lavrov owns a luxurious 250 sqm apartment in central Moscow, acquired at a suspiciously young age by his daughter, Ekaterina Vinokurova (a US citizen who studied in the UK, whose children grew up there, and who reportedly has gay friends). He also possesses a 500 sqm house in the Moscow suburbs, purchased for hundreds of millions of rubles in 2014, far exceeding his declared earnings. The true extent of his double life became apparent with revelations about his secret family. His mistress, Svetlana Polyakova, has amassed an astonishing portfolio of expensive properties, including a 700 million ruble apartment in Moscow, luxury apartments in Sochi, and a sprawling house in the Moscow region, none of which can be explained by her official income. Polyakova regularly travels with Lavrov on official state aircraft and attends high-level government events, often listed in contact lists as "Svetlana Lavrova." Her daughter lives a lavish lifestyle, often seen on Oleg Deripaska’s yachts and private jets. This stark contrast between public pronouncements and private conduct highlights the hypocrisy of the Russian elite and their rampant double standards.

Russia's adventurism in the Middle East and Africa has also yielded a poor return on investment. After intervening in the Syrian conflict in 2015 to bolster Bashar al-Assad's regime, Russia gained military bases but also became embroiled in a protracted war. Despite significant military support to the Syrian regime, including bombings of rebels, the tide has turned. In late 2024, rebels captured Damascus, and Assad fled to Russia. Russia's long-term military presence in Syria is now uncertain, with satellite images showing the withdrawal of significant equipment. Similarly, Russia's alliance with Iran is showing cracks. While Iran supplied Shahed drones for the Ukraine war, Israel's recent attacks on Iranian military and nuclear sites met with a muted response from Moscow. The highly touted S-300 air defense systems provided by Russia proved ineffective. Even Moscow's attempts to mediate the Israel-Hamas conflict have been ineffective. Despite Hamas visiting Moscow and one Russian hostage being released "thanks to Putin's efforts," Russia’s influence remains marginal. The recent withdrawal of Wagner PMC from Mali also signals the diminishing returns of Russia's expansion into Africa. The Western sanctions, imposed on Russia after the Ukraine war, have severely impacted its ability to maintain these alliances. Russia simply lacks the resources to continue supporting its partners financially and militarily, leading to further loss of influence on the global stage.

Failures of Russian Diplomacy under Sergei Lavrov:

Unprofessionalism and Rudeness:

* Indiscretion of Lavrov's aide, Sergei Kuryatnikov, on social media.

* Lavrov's public insults and rudeness towards foreign diplomats and journalists.

* Lavrov's scandalous statements that caused international outcry (e.g., about "Hitler's Jewish blood").

International Isolation:

* Mass walkouts by diplomats during Lavrov's speeches at international forums.

* Boycotts of group photos with Lavrov at G7 and G20 summits.

* Closure of Russian consulates and expulsion of hundreds of Russian diplomats from Western countries.

* Repeated denials of entry for Lavrov into "friendly" nations.

Loss of Influence Among Former Allies:

* Kazakhstan's public disagreement with Russia's stance on "quasi-state formations" in Donbas.

* Armenia summoning the Russian ambassador over "hostile propaganda."

* Deterioration of relations with Azerbaijan after ambiguous statements by Lavrov.

Delegitimization of the Foreign Ministry:

* Putin's increasing reliance on non-diplomatic figures for sensitive negotiations.

* Use of Patriarch Kirill for diplomatic missions instead of Lavrov.

Corruption and Double Standards:

* Lavrov and his official family owning luxury real estate inconsistent with their declared incomes.

* The existence of Lavrov's "secret family" (mistress Svetlana Polyakova and her daughter), who lead lavish lifestyles from unexplained sources.

* Polyakova and her daughter using private jets and yachts belonging to oligarch Oleg Deripaska.

Failure of Foreign Policy Ventures:

* Loss of control over Syria after Assad's flight and withdrawal of Russian equipment.

* Ineffectiveness of Russian S-300 air defense systems supplied to Iran during Israeli attacks.

* Decreased Russian influence in the Israel-Hamas conflict.

* Withdrawal of Wagner PMC from Mali.

Impact of Western Sanctions:

* Lack of resources to support allies and maintain an active foreign policy.
