Putin's Playbook - KGB Tactics and Religious Symbols Target the West

Recent discussions on "The Breakfast Show," featuring insights from former Soviet intelligence officer Sergey Zhirnov, highlight Vladimir Putin's strategic use of mysticism and religious symbolism as calculated tools of influence, particularly aimed at Western audiences like Donald Trump and his evangelical supporters.

The show's hosts noted Putin frequently invokes religious themes, citing the example of proposing an Easter truce while seemingly ignoring the sanctity of Palm Sunday when attacking civilian targets. This apparent contradiction, Zhirnov explained, aligns with classic KGB "operational psychology." These tactics involve identifying and manipulating a target's core values and vulnerabilities to establish "emotional dependency."

This isn't a new strategy. A parallel was drawn to Putin's 2001 interactions with George W. Bush. Putin shared a story about a cross gifted by his mother miraculously surviving a fire – a tale designed to resonate with the deeply religious Bush, who famously claimed to have looked into Putin's eyes and seen his "soul." Zhirnov confirmed that studying a target's personality, beliefs (positive or negative), and finding points of leverage is standard KGB practice.

The hosts emphasized that these manipulations primarily target American voters, especially the significant evangelical Christian base crucial to Trump's support (constituting 26-28% of voters in recent elections, with 76-81% backing Trump). By speaking their language – invoking faith, tradition, sacrifice, prayer (like praying for Trump), and portraying himself as a "crusader" against perceived Western godlessness – Putin aims to influence US politics and potentially weaken support for Ukraine.

Zhirnov asserts Putin himself isn't genuinely religious but is superstitious, using faith purely for political and material gain – maintaining power and his regime. While unpleasant to admit, Zhirnov grades Putin's execution of these manipulative, KGB-honed techniques with a "5," acknowledging their effectiveness in hitting their intended targets. The strategy replaces traditional weapons with potent symbols, skillfully exploiting cultural and religious values for geopolitical ends.
