Russian Attack on Chernobyl

Russian Attack on Chernobyl Russian Attack on Chernobyl Russian Attack on Chernobyl Russian Attack on Chernobyl Russian Attack on Chernobyl Russian Attack on Chernobyl

On the night of February 14, 2025, Russian forces attacked the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. They used a kamikaze drone to hit the sarcophagus, which is the structure covering the destroyed Reactor No. 4. The strike caused a fire, but firefighters quickly put it out. Luckily, radiation levels at the plant did not increase. This event has caused great concern around the world, and many have condemned Russia.

The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) says that the attack used a "Geran-2" kamikaze drone, similar to a "Shahed." This drone carried explosives. Drone fragments found at the site show it was Russian and that the sarcophagus was the intended target. The SBU has started investigating this as an act of terrorism.

The strike damaged the outer wall of the New Safe Confinement (NSC) and equipment in a garage for cranes. The Ministry of Energy of Ukraine immediately informed the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) about this. Ukraine is asking the world to put pressure on Russia to stop nuclear terrorism.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy strongly condemned the attack. He said it was a "hello" from Putin about security at the Munich conference. Zelenskyy emphasized that this shows Russia doesn't want peace and is willing to create nuclear danger. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that the information about the strike was a "provocation" and lies, and that Russian forces did not do anything like that.

Other countries around the world are very worried and angry about the attack on Chernobyl. The Head of the Office of the President of Ukraine, Andriy Yermak, said that at the Munich Security Conference, everyone is "angry" about Russia's actions. This is especially because many countries helped Ukraine to clean up after the Chernobyl disaster and build the new shelter.

Currently, the situation at Chernobyl is under control. Radiation levels are normal, and experts are continuing to monitor the situation and assess the damage. But this incident shows that Russia's actions create a constant nuclear threat. Therefore, it is necessary for countries around the world to work together to prevent this from happening again in the future.
