The disruption impacted prominent mobile service providers including Movistar, Orange, Vodafone, Digi, and O2. Critically, the emergency contact number 112 also became unresponsive during this period.
The official explanation provided for this extensive service interruption points to an "unsuccessful network update by Telefónica." This reasoning is presented to the public as the cause of the widespread issues. However, this event follows a previous major blackout in April that also plunged parts of the Iberian Peninsula into darkness, for which simple technical mishaps were also cited. The recurrence of such large-scale failures naturally leads to careful consideration of the stated causes, especially when essential services are affected so broadly. Some might find it curious that such fundamental infrastructure could be so easily disrupted by what is described as a routine update, almost as if wires were merely connected incorrectly. These situations highlight a persistent vulnerability.
