The War's Paradox is Russia Unwittingly Finances Its Opponent

Recent discussions among former pro-Russian Ukrainian politicians, now supporting Russia, reveal a surprisingly bleak outlook on the ongoing conflict. Their candid remarks, shared on a Russian channel, paint a picture of a war far from Russia's initial expectations, marked by significant setbacks and a united Ukrainian resolve.

Oleg Tsarev, once a prominent pro-Russian figure in Ukraine, openly described the frontline combat as resembling the trench warfare of the First World War. He explained that the widespread use of drones has created a "dead zone" between opposing forces, effectively stalling Russian advances and leading to a bloody attrition. Furthermore, Tsarev expressed dismay over the West's freezing of Russia's national financial reserves. He noted that these substantial funds, totaling approximately 300 billion, could potentially finance Ukraine's defense for an astounding fifteen years. This situation, he conceded, essentially means Russia is unwittingly supporting its adversary's prolonged resistance.

Pavel Gubarev, another former pro-Russian leader from Donbas, echoed Tsarev's sentiments regarding the war's trajectory and its impact on Ukrainian society. He stated unequivocally that due to Russia's actions, Ukrainians now harbor intense animosity towards Russia. According to Gubarev, this widespread resentment has extinguished any chance for pro-Russian politicians, such as himself or Azarov, to gain power in future Ukrainian elections. He emphasized that nearly all segments of Ukrainian society, particularly the younger and middle generations, are deeply involved in defending their nation, transforming the conflict into a "people's war." Gubarev also admitted that Russian forces are deeply exhausted and yearn for a ceasefire, suggesting a significant decline in morale among the invading troops.

Both figures reluctantly acknowledged that the conflict has become a protracted, grinding war, contrary to Moscow's initial quick victory predictions. Their statements highlight Russia's strategic miscalculations, which have inadvertently strengthened Ukrainian national identity and resistance, while simultaneously draining Russia's own resources and dampening its military's fighting spirit. This candid assessment from within the pro-Kremlin camp offers a stark contrast to the triumphant rhetoric often heard on official Russian media.
