in an attempt to prevent customers from getting diarrhea after dining at their restaurant.
A court in Nantong, Jiangsu province, sentenced Chef Sha to two years in prison and his colleague Fu to 18 months for producing and selling toxic and harmful food. Their sentences have been suspended for an unspecified period.
In addition to their suspended sentences, the chefs were fined a total of 160,000 yuan (approximately US$22,000) and required to issue a public apology through the media.
The chefs were discovered in September of the previous year when a restaurant employee reported to authorities that gentamicin sulfate had been injected into dishes before they were served to customers.
